Heartstrings

Yesterday was a good day. In view of the horrific 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti just a few days ago, my heartstrings are being tugged to do something for others. Last fall I thought I'd sign up to volunteer for the Red Cross. Yesterday it was done. Since I am a nurse, I volunteered for deployment in the event that nursing care would be needed. There is a mountain of paperwork to complete, background checks to be done and training to be completed before I am ready for deployment should it ever be needed. I am strong, I am ready and willing. I feel that it's a call from God. He gave me skills and knowledge not to be wasted by a retirement from the corporate world.
All of this makes me think of more that can be done on our own homesteads, both rural and urban, to get ourselves ready for an event. Disasters don't have to be natural disasters such as flooding or tornados, earthquakes, fires or ice storms. It could entail the loss of a job or other income, it could entail illness and being unable to complete the normal activities of daily living. Or, it could mean tending to someone else's needs in the event of an emergency. At any rate, it's a good thing, to be wise and prudent. We're getting there.

About Me

My photo
Hi Folks! My name is Candy and I have been married to my best friend, my one true love, Steve, for 11 years now. We are a combined family with 7 grown kids and 14 grandbabies. Our children are all over the US; Illinois, Louisiana, Utah, Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii. We are proudly owned and operated by an ever growing menagerie of animals: parrots, parakeets, cockatiels and cockatoos, dogs, cats, chickens, and 2 rabbits. We have a huge garden in the summer, planted fruit trees and grape vines last year, can food from the garden, sew, quilt and make our own soap. Needless to say, we live in the country, have an avid interest in homesteading and how to make it do-able on a small acreage plot of ground. We've had alot of successes, a couple of near misses and a couple of "really missed the target" in our venture and look forward to sharing them like-minded folks.
